We’ll start with a familiar name - the ever-recognisable Volkswagen Golf. A favourite of first-time drivers everywhere, it’s a famously economical car that excels as a city runaround, but it certainly proves its mettle as a commuter vehicle too. Easily capable of 70mpg, its economical engines means that the petrol costs don’t stack up too much over long distances, which is welcome news if you’re trying to save your fuel money. Ford Mondeo
Another popular model from a world-class manufacturer, the Ford Mondeo has endeared itself to UK drivers with its effortlessly smooth ride, courtesy of its finely-honed suspension system. The interior matches up to expectations, too, being both spacious and comfortable, and often packed with a healthy range of in-car technology and entertainment. As well as providing a pleasant ride for the driver and passengers, it’s got a decent amount of storage space as well - 541 litres, in fact. Vauxhall Insignia
